FAQs

Should I enroll in the course if I shoot with a camera phone or point and shoot camera?

I suggest that you wait until you have a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a Manual mode setting to get the most out of the course. It is hands on, we will spend time shooting in each session, and reviewing images in camera. The goal of the course is to get comfortable with Manual mode shooting and move beyond automatic settings that lack creative control of your camera and desired images. You don’t need the most expensive camera or lens on the market but at the very least an entry level DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera) is the recommended gear.

Will cameras be provided during the course?

Cameras will not be provided for the students. I will have my Canon R6 Mark II to illustrate the topics covered in each session. Please bring your camera to class with a fully charged battery.

Will we be shooting in a studio or outdoors?

The sessions will meet outdoors rain or shine but the location will be updated accordingly based on the weather to a covered space. We will work with ambient light vs flash lighting set ups.

Is there a make-up session for class sessions that are missed?

There are no make-up sessions planned at this time.

Will course materials be shared after the course?

Yes, I will email you a copy of the presentation that is shared in the first class session.

Is the instructor available to answer my questions via text or email throughout the month of my scheduled course?

Yes, course related questions will be answered via text or email to assist you on your journey to capturing better images in Manual mode. I welcome the opportunity to review and discuss your images.

Are composition, lighting, or photo editing software covered in the course curriculum?

We will touch on the these topics in a general sense but not in depth during the Photography 101 Course. Our core focus will be to learn aperture, shutter speed, and ISO - the trinity for a proper exposure.

Why should I take the course when there are tons of free tutorials online?

The in-person engagement will allow you to learn real time alongside an instructor that is passionate about photography and helping you improve your images in camera while shooting in Manual mode. Online tutorials are great refreshers but learning in person is always the best-case scenario when learning a technical skill such as photography. Meeting and connecting with like-minded people on a similar path with their photography is also inspiring and another bonus of a class setting.
